If I’m driving down a lonely road with whirlwind thoughts at nights, that Tom Cruise version of “I Want To Know What Love Is’. If I’m driving NASCAR-fast, Cake’s ‘The Distance’. But ‘Drive’ by The Cars is a win-win because I’ll be in a car driving while this song is playing.
However, this is not a feel-good song as anyone can tell from the lyrics. It’s a melancholic song about a man watching an ex’s (presumably) life go down the drain. But I like to interpret it as anyone can love you when you’re on top of the world happy because everything just seems to be going your way, but the singer would love you when everything has gone wrong, when you’re at your lowest and loneliest point in life (kind of like wedding vows, eh?). He’ll be there for you to support you throughout.
The song can also be about someone in a relationship with an alcoholic and he’s telling her that they need to address the issue, but it’s sad all around for both parties involved.
Whichever way one chooses to look at it, it’s a beautifully haunting song.
