50 Foods #13: Garum

Origin: The Roman Empire
Date: c. 4th century BCE to 5th century CE
Type: Fermented fish sauce

According to this chapter, garum was made from the parts that remained after fish had been salted and barreled. This fermented fish sauce was Roman’s obsession. Maybe it changed the course of history, but not too many people know about garum aka Ancient Rome ketchup. Although garum is considered to be originated in the Roman Empire, it was said to be enjoyed by the Greeks earlier.

Last year, I read that Spain is bringing the sauce back from the ancient dead.

Would I eat it?: I won’t be using this anytime soon!
