The Hoopoe

Birds are fascinating creatures and not to mention, extremely beautiful. They can vie for beauty pageants! Case in point, the punk rocking Hoopoe (pronounced ‘hu-pu’ which is EXACTLY how they sound like!), the national bird of Israel.

Image: The exotic Hoopoe

🐦 In Deuteronomy 14:18, the hoopoe is listed as one of the birds not to be eaten.

🐦 Hoopoes are named after the sound of their call. Their name is a combination of the Latin “upupa” and the Greek “epops” hence the punchline “upupa epops”.

🐦 The female prefer to nest in holes of tree trunks, cliffs, walls, and even birdhouses! The female stays inside the nest until the eggs hatch. Some will close up the nest as much as possible leaving only an opening for daddy bird to bring food.

🐦 African Hoopoes are not sociable birds, and they are generally found in pairs or singular.

🐦 The hoopoe became the national bird of Israel in 2008 winning over the likes of the bulbul, warbler, and finch.

The Hoopoe is quite the singer! Watch this video via Wildlife World to listen to the Eurasian Hoopoe sing and stay to see it in flight.

The Gulls

Gulls are found throughout the world in coastal habitats, and they’re often the largest birds along the shore. There are over 50 species of gulls that are found throughout the world, and they’re said to be intelligent and curious birds.

🐦 Gulls have webbed feet with small talons; their webbed feet allow them to walk and take off from water.

🐦 Gulls are capable of drinking both fresh and saltwater thanks to a pair of special glands right above their eyes.

🐦 Seagulls often steal food from other birds, animals, and people.

🐦 In Utah, the seagull is the bird of the state. They’re remembered for helping Mormon settlers deal with a plague of crickets and a monument in Salt Lake City known as the “Miracle of the Gulls” fondly commemorates the event.

🐦 The Little Gull is the smallest in the gull species, while the largest is the Great Black-beaked Gull.

Gulls are mischievous, tricky, finders keepers with serial killer eyes (well, some of them) and you can see some of them in action via Fun and Positive TV:

The Eagle

The Eagle is a bird of prey and the King of Birds! They fly higher than the others and they have no time to mix and gossip with other bird folks. Whenever I think of this bird, I reflect on Isaiah 40:31. The usage of the eagle is a metaphor for strength. Our frailty gives God the opportunity to pour His strength into us when we ask for we can do ALL things through Him that gives us strength (Philippians 4:13).

 African fish Eagle

🐦 There are over 60 species of eagles; most of them are from Europe, Asia, and Africa.

🐦 The eagle is the national bird of Kazakhstan, Austria, Mexico, and Germany. The bird is also found on several national flags including Egypt, Serbia, and Moldova.

🐦 The bald eagle takes its name from the fact it has a white head while the rest of its body is brown.

🐦 An eagle’s beak contains keratin, which means that it grows all the time just like human hair and fingernails.

🐦 The eagle is known to be one of the strongest birds able to carry the heaviest loads.

The eagle is a majestic, powerful, and intimidating bird. Don’t believe me? Go watch the Golden Eagle fly in slow motion and watch it stare into your soul at the beginning of the video. I love Eagles so much! 💙

The Duck

Hello and welcome back to this bird segment! I’m going to try my best to wrap up this challenge soon for I want to move onto another one. So without further ado:

Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) | Our World’s 10 Beautiful and Colorful Birds

Image: The ever gorgeous Mandarin Duck

🐦 Ducks are mostly aquatic birds living in both freshwater and seawater and found on every continent except for Antarctica. Their webbed feet have no nerves or blood vessels, thus, rendering them incapable of feeling the cold.

🐦 All domestic ducks are descended from either the Mallard or the Muscovy duck.

Female Mallard duck - beautiful feather markings!

Image: A female Mallard duck

🐦 The more daylight there is, the more eggs a hen produces.

🐦 Ducks have excellent vision! They have a field of vision of nearly 340 degrees!

🐦 And you know that saying about a duck’s quack producing no echo? That’s quackers for a duck’s quack does indeed echo. 😉

The Crane

I thought about discontinuing this challenge earlier when I realized that I haven’t been updating it as I should, but timing is everything. I plan to see this challenge to the end no matter how long it may take me.

These birds got rhythm in their feet and wings!

🐦 The 15 species of cranes are placed in four genera. The Japanese cranes (pic above) are my absolute favorite!

🐦 Cranes are large birds with long legs and long elegant necks. When they fly, their necks are often outstretched.

Black Crowned Crane, Uganda

Image: Black Crowned Cranes

🐦 The cranberry got its name from Dutch and German settlers. They called it “crane berry” because of the plant’s crane-like stem and flower and the berry grew in marshy areas where cranes hang out.

🐦 Cranes dance to attract a partner, and they mate for life.

Other birds with the letter ‘C’ I considered were the elegant Courser, Cockatoo, and the Cormorant. Now, go watch these majestic birds dance. It’s the best thing you’re going to see today, if not for the week.

The Blood Pheasant

I have a confession: I forgot all about this challenge! 😔

Before I continue, I want to thank my sister Denisia for helping me with this project. She found the majority of photos – including the one I’m about to do – for she was excited to help. Thank you, sis! I really appreciate it. 💙 This bird is truly a beauty!

The Blood Pheasant from the Himalayas. The males have vivid red coloring on the feathers of the breast, throat, forehead and tail.

🐦 There are 15 different subspecies of the Blood Pheasant. This species is so named from the fact that the males have a vivid red coloring on the feathers of the breast, throat, and forehead. Females tend to have duller shades of reddish-brown, but both males and females have a ring of bare skin around the eye that is crimson-colored and red feet.

Image: Female Blood Pheasant

🐦 They originated from the Himalayas and can be found in the mountains of Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim, Tibet, northern Burma, and northwest areas of China.

🐦 The Blood Pheasant is the state bird of the Indian state of Sikkim. This is off-topic, but Sikkim is GORGEOUS!!

Image result for Sikkim

🐦 They are good runners, but poor fliers.

🐦 These birds prefer green natural habitat such as mixed forests and scrub areas right at the snowline. Depending on the season, they can be found at a higher elevation.

Tibetan Blood Pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus tibetanus) - Adult male;Thrumshingla National Park, Bhutan

Other birds with the letter ‘B’ I considered were the Bald Eagle, Bahama Mockingbird, Bamboo Scrub-Warbler and the Barn Owl. I leave you with a video of the Blood Pheasant in its natural habitat.

A to Z

The Anhinga

Yay! I can finally start this new A to Z challenge! I’ve been looking forward to bringing more of God’s beautiful and marvelous creation to this blog. Today, we look at the Anhinga bird. I won’t write too much information, just what I deem interesting. 😃

An Anhinga dries its wings in the early morning sun at the Venice Rookery, Florida.

🐦 The name Anhinga comes from the Tupi Indians in Brazil from a Tupi word which means “snake-bird”, “devil bird” or “evil spirit of the woods.”

🐦 Because of its distinctive shape, the Anhinga is sometimes called “snake bird” for its long snakelike flexible neck (this was actually the first feature I noticed in this bird) and “water turkey” for its turkeylike tail. It is also sometimes called the American darter. I’ll just call it a “snake turkey” bird.

🐦 Anhingas feast primarily on fish, but their diet can also include aquatic crustaceans and insects.

🐦 They resemble cormorants, but they’re no match for the cormorants when it comes to swimming and hunting.

Image: The Cormorant

🐦 Species of Anhingas can be found all over the world including the United States, Grenada, Cuba, and Trinidad & Tobago. They usually live in sheltered waters.

🐦 Additional fun fact: The Anhinga swims lower in the water than many other birds due to its reduced buoyancy-a result of wetted plumage and dense bones. (via allaboutbirds.org)
