Mission: Impossible – Fallout was 🔥

Mission: Impossible – Fallout opened here (Trinidad) last evening and I had to be there on opening day. To be honest, I thought we were getting this movie on August 01st for we hardly get movies this early, but I ain’t complaining. I enjoyed it in the company of a few friends and they’ll be returning to watch it again. Yes, it was that good.

This time around, McQuarrie gives us a deeper look at what makes Ethan Hunt tick. The film is filled with lots of eye-popping action and Tom Cruise ran away with the show.

I’ll be writing a full review sometime next week God’s willing if I get up to it.

MI:6 – Parisian premiere and that wicked fight scene!

This post will self-destruct in five seconds (possibly).

The actors of Mission: Impossible – Fallout turned out for the Parisian premiere last evening and the critics couldn’t stop raving about the movie. The movie started filming without a script. Reminds me of my own writing, sometimes. I just wing it sometimes abandoning plotting and outlining. Anyway, the City of Love was bathed in splendor and glamour last evening.

The Eiffel Tower totally wore it better and outshone everyone else.

All eyes were on Tom…

…who proved that he isn’t a vampire once and for all. I mean, look at that aging. If that isn’t aging, then I don’t want to live on this planet anymore. He said that the movie is a “love letter to Paris”. And I honestly don’t know how can he stops to talk to every fan, sign every autograph and take every selfie even before the red carpet starts!

A few raves about the movie:

Entertainment Weekly: He’s (Tom) “ageless”, with the film getting “better, twistier and more deliriously fun with each installment.”

Variety: “with each one (MI film) surpassing the last this one is the most exciting and ambitious of the lot”.

The Telegraph: “spectacular and eye-popping” and “the blockbuster of the summer”

Even if the critics didn’t like it, I was still planning on seeing it because this franchize has grown on me. The spy action genre does not come better than this and I love that Paris is one of the backdrops for this film because Paris makes every movie look good even when it doesn’t deserve to. And the crew is going to do a lot of running for their lives.

Tom says that there’s some ‘heart’ in the movie. Who is he going to romance? The ex-wife? The crazy super spy who’s his equal? The blondie he’s holding hands with in the picture above as they run for their lives? Somebody, tell me! Eh, forget it. I’ll see when the film drops. I want to talk about the epic bathroom fight scene, though. I wanted to wait until I start my new series on writing, but alas! It cannot wait so let’s get to it.

The bathroom is made of cardboard or the men are just really strong. That aside, I like how the fight looks realistic despite the Asian dude tearing a drain pipe from the wall. Ethan Hunt does not beat everyone in the room singlehandedly and walks out unscathed. He gets blows and lands blows. Even August Walker gets some blows, too. He’s supposed to be “babysitting” Ethan if he tries to go rogue again and yet, he gets his butt handed to him although he does get in some nice punches. Looks like the brawler type though, and I am still on the fence with Henry Cavill. I like him better when he’s not speaking.

The fight choreography was really well done right down to Hunt’s keysi moves and reaction timing. The Asian man is trying to take out an IMF agent and a CIA assassin at the same time! I especially love the part where August throws the man into the mirror, dude grabs the pipe just as Ethan comes running without looking (13 seconds in) and he just hurls it at Ethan, but super agent ducks in time and the pipe hits the wall. The look on Ethan’s face when he sees the pipe coming towards it was priceless. And the fact that there is no music makes it even better for the realism and the grittiness shines through. Hollywood, this is how you do a fight scene.

This movie is definitely going to put all the other MIs to bed. Everyone has outdone themselves based on what I’ve seen so far.

Catch MI Fallout in theaters from July 27th. Summer is going to be 🔥🔥.

And then there were two

Croatia beat England 2-1 last evening to claim a spot in the final to face the French. Was there ever any doubt about the Croatians? They’ve been consistent throughout the tournament. What also motivated them, according to Luka Modric, was the English arrogance. English pundits and journalists were showing their disrespect to Croatia and they weren’t having any of that.

So, the Croatians will meet the French on Sunday for a thrilling – and hopefully, epic – final. The French camp refuses to get ahead of themselves and captain Hugo Lloris said it best:

Sometime during my semi-final write up, I said that Croatia knows that they have what it takes to win it all, and although I am satisfied with how far they’ve come, I’ll be supporting Les Bleus all the way be it victory or defeat.

C’est Magnifique! 🇫🇷

Umtiti scored the only goal – a great header in the 51′ – to beat Belgium and put France in the final since 2006 last evening. This is their second final in two years (2016, they reached the Euro final only to lose to Portugal) and this is their now or never moment. France did not reach the final because of one man, it was a team effort.

Belgium vs. France: Semi Final - 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

Belgium was lucky that France had poor finishing in this match for they could’ve had 3 goals more at the final whistle. We were effective on the offense as well in defense. They dominated the match with less possession in the second half and did not allow Belgium to create any chances. But Belgium should hold their heads up and be happy for they played a great game so hats off to them.

Les Bleus, it’s been quite a journey and you’ve proved many doubters wrong over and over again. The final is the last stop so let’s make it count.

Allez Les Bleus! 🇫🇷 🇫🇷

It’s the semi-finals of the World Cup today! France takes on Belgium in a matter of hours, but Les Bleus have a history of royally messing things up so whether victory or defeat, ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

My World Cup book over on Wattpad is currently number 1 in the World Cup 2018 category and it may not mean anything given that the rankings always seem to change, but I am grateful for the number of readers who have been supporting the book from day one. 💙

Les Bleus sends La Celeste home

France beat Uruguay 2-0 to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2006.

Les Bleus outplayed Uruguay in the opening 30 minutes and had nothing to show for it until the 40′ when Varane scored a scintillating header! It was his 3rd goal for France.

No more goals would come until the 60′ when Griezmann fires from the edge of the box. The ball heads straight for Muslera who make a regulation save, but ends up palming the ball at the back of the net.  Yes, it was a howler for a keeper like Muslera, but it’s not like Uruguay were drawing the French 1-1, so don’t be hard on him.

Luis Suárez looked lost without Cavani who did not make the starting XI but made the bench nevertheless. But even with El Matador on the pitch, I don’t think Uruguay would’ve won. They did not bring much to this match and the French didn’t give the South Americans much space to work with. I have to commend the French for their excellent defending in this match. 👍

I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in Mbappé showing off his acting chops. In December he said,

“I am learning every day from Neymar. I try to watch all the things he is doing in order to learn as quick as possible.”

So, I guess he’s learning well from the master. Imagine if the two of them meet in the semis! But it won’t happen for my gut feeling is going with Belgium. It’s going to be a French showdown!

There is one man who goes about his work effectively and quietly, that his masterclass is almost dismissed and that is my boy, N’Golo Kanté. I notice all the hard work that he puts in even though he shuns the limelight and I am delighted with it. He is our engine at only 5’5. He is consistent, a joy to watch, has a great partnership with Paul Pogba, and a masterclass midfielder. He is a precious gem.

And today was no different. He had an excellent game today! There is no better holding midfielder in the world currently than him and France should be grateful for him.

I also want to commend Olivier Giroud for occupying the Uruguayan defense. He was a force to be reckoned with proving that he doesn’t have to score to make a name for himself.

And Hugo Lloris just claimed the save of the tournament! Just before the break, he denied Martín Cáceres by using his right foot to stretch his upper body thus saving what was a potential goal. Many shocked people said that he had no right to save that, which is true, but we Les Bleus fans know that Hugo Boss is a cat. 😎

And last but never least, Didier Deschamps. When the tournament kicked off, I was not pleased with the way Les Bleus began. When they played Argentina, I witnessed the growth I was looking for and it was the same today against Uruguay. Yes, there is still room for improvement, but Deschamps is working through it, and I am happy to see that.

One of my favorite moment during the match was when he took Pogba aside and talked some sense into his head when some Uruguayans clashed with the French. He is often criticized, but he is a very good leader. For example, when Argentina went 2-1 up early in the 2nd half, Didier Deschamps ushered players to the touchline and asked them not to be scared. 9 minutes later, Benjamin Pavard equalized. And when he joked with Griezmann after his substitution.

Thank you, Uruguay for gracing us with your presence in this year’s tournament. As for France…

ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

Mbappé and Cavani stand out on the world stage!

Day 16 of the world’s most beautiful game: France sends Argentina packing and Cavani made Portugal pack their bags to join them.

I did not get to watch any of the matches because it was the Sabbath and I attended church. But the sun has set now and I looked at the highlights and was satisfied with what I saw. I hope to catch the MOTD in a few hours.

France v Argentina 4-3

I said that I’ll be satisfied with whichever team won and I am happy with France’s progression. Griezmann gave Les Bleus an early lead through a penalty in the 13′ which was canceled out by  Angel Di Maria’s stunning goal in the 41′. Mercado put Argentina ahead in the 48′ coming from a Messi assist, but France was not about to let Argentina have all the fun and struck back through Benjamin Pavard in the 57′ to level things up.

Mbappé decided to join the party and scored in the 64′ causing Argentina to panic. Olivier Giroud’s scrumptious pass found the young man again 4 minutes later and Mbappé tucked it away to pile on the pressure on the Argentines who responded through Sergio Aguero in the 90′ from a Messi assist but it was already too late.

Shucks! I didn’t plan this commentary!

Thanks for gracing us with your presence at the World Cup, Argentina.

Uruguay v Portugal 2-1

CAVANI! BAE! Cavani came into this tournament to prove that he was good enough to represent his country and he certainly made his point today after scoring two beautiful goals which dumped Portugal out of the WC. He was emotional after both goals, but after limping off with an injury, he was inconsolable when the final whistle blew. I hope the injury is nothing serious because I want to see him feature in the game against the French on Friday.
