Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
1 Corinthians 6:19
Matthew 21:12-16.
Mark 11:15-19.
Luke 19:45-48.
John 2:13-17.
When I read those accounts of Jesus Christ cleansing the temple of desecration, it made me pause and analyze the physical temple which is my body. What should’ve taken place in the court of the Gentiles – the merchants and moneychangers misusing the temple as a marketplace that it actually started to resemble a thieves’ den – was taking place in a house of prayer. After cleansing the temple, Jesus shows the proper use of it by healing the lame and the blind and by teaching.
The world and its ways have crept into the house of God. It has also crept into the Lord’s living temple which is our bodies. Over the years, we’ve taken in so many unclean things through various forms of unfiltered entertainment, that we still revert to the old ways sometimes despite being a new creature in Christ. Just think about it.
Every sin that is committed by us in the sanctuary is the Holy of Holies where God dwells.
God created our bodies, Jesus redeemed them through His unblemished blood and the Holy Spirit dwells within. So, yes, this makes our body the temple of God.
With the Holy Spirit residing in us, we are led to honor and glorify God with our bodies. Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve been allowing inside God’s temple. Does it need cleansing? We can start by getting “rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” and by being “kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32).
Let us go into this new week cleansing the filth from God’s temple.
Reflection
Our bodies belong to the Lord (1 Corinthians 6:13). It is a member of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:15) and it is where the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).
Amen—may I always remember that my body is God’s temple!!
