Day 21: A favorite song with a person’s name in the title

Hmm, interesting. πŸ€”

The Potentials

Jack and Diane – John Mellencamp

Mandy – Barry Manilow

Fernando – Abba

Rio – Duran Duran

The Runner-Up

Bille Jean – Michael Jackson

Diana – Paul Anka

The Winner

To be honest, whenever I was asked to name a song with someone’s name in it, I went straight for ‘Dirty Diana’ by Michael Jackson. Mike had the most amazing stories to tell through song whether they were fact or fiction and I appreciated his storytelling abilities.Β

I think this song is one of Michael’s most dramatic and emotional song on so many levels. He sings with such pain, sweet misery, and fragility, that for one second, the listener is inclined to believe that Mike is singing from personal experience, which he was in my opinion, although he denied it… multiple times! *shrugging* Oh well. I also like looking at it this way: the Jezebel figure he’s singing about represents the industry. He’s been around the industry since he was what? Five or so years old?Β

“You’ll never make me stay. So take your weight off of me” here, he could be referring to the controlling industry. “I know your every move. So baby please let me be” represents his experience in the music business. There was also that time when Mike tried to expose Sony and his words were something along the line of, “They really thought that my mind was on music and dancing, but they never thought that this performer myself will out-think them.” Although he’s been in the industry since he was a child, he had no idea that he was just a pawn in something bigger hence “I been here times before. But I was too blind to see. That you seduce every man this time you won’t seduce me”. Eh, they set you up to tear you down for once you sign that contract, you’ve officially relinquished all control and rights to your image so consider yourself seduced!

Yeah, sometimes I ramble a lot and I like to overanalyzeΒ things, but Michael’s songs always seem to have a hidden meaning… if you don’t take them at face value! πŸ˜„

  1. :):):) it was the first song that came to my mind when I read the question. The lyrics do resemble a serenade to the industry. It was also rumored that it was about princess Diana. She was reportedly at one of his concerts, and when he sang this song, they said he sang it like he was serenading her. I didn’t read much into it. He was a performer, and knew how to generade press for himself. I chalked it up to a “this will make headlines” moment.

    1. Haha! I’m glad we think alike! πŸ˜„I remember people saying so, but I’ll say it was about Diana Ross if we’re to go that route. As for the other Diana, she attended one of his concerts and he thought it would’ve been disrespectful to sing that song at the show when he heard that she was attending so he made a last minute change in the set and didn’t sing the song. However, Diana met him after the concert and asked him why he didn’t sing DD because it was one of her favorites! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚That was a funny story, though. Ah, well, this song used to be a huge favorite of mine growing up.

      1. No biggie, my dearest. I mean, I was there during the recording process and what not so I know these things. Haha! Joking aside, whatever the true story was, I’m just glad this song existed… back then.

  2. I had a few songs that came to mind when I started reading this post, but I got so caught up in reading about your selection and then the comments that I completely forgot what songs I was thinking about that fit this challenge. πŸ™‚

      1. Oh, thank you! You totally busted me. I was trying to get the new design for the website out before my post comes out this week. I’m trying to figure out all the settings to make it look how I want it to before tomorrow.
I can’t remember the songs that originally came to mind. Well, one came to mind, Nikita by Elton John. Here’s a few more that I like: Goodnight Elisabeth by Counting Crows, Lorraine by Peter Bradley Adams, and Emelie by filous & MOUNT, featuring Buster Moe. That’s quite an eclectic mix of name songs for you.

      2. You’re utmost welcome! Haha! I tend to pop in your site to see if there’s anything new and I was greeted with the new design. It’s so crisp and professional.

I remember liking that Nikita song! Thank you for sharing your selection. πŸ’™

      3. Thank you so much for the feedback about the new look of my site. I’ve been wanting to change the look for a while, but I worried about losing some of the functionality of the site with a different theme. I believe this one will allow me to still have all the components I liked about the previous theme.

    1. You never know what you’re getting with his music! He’s a storyteller, but look pass that & whoa mama! Always something underneath the layers.

    1. I always thought he was singing about something else entirely and not about ‘Diana’. πŸ˜„
