Origin:ย Frankfurt am Main
Date:ย From the 12th century
Type:ย Finely ground smoked pork sausage
Although the author mentioned it, I recall reading about the history of the frankfurter because I had to research for a food history project. It was the 19th century when German soldiers emigrated to America. They were the ones responsible for bringing frankfurters to the USA and knowing the Americans, they can take ANYTHING and create food, hence the hotdog (another story for another time).
Would I eat it?:ย Nope!
Otto von Bismarck said it best,ย โLaws are like sausages. It is better not to see them being made.โ

I’ve always wanted to try these! My family is mostly German (German and Polish, ironically) and yet I’ve only tried the Americanized version of these (a.k.a., hot dogs). However, if I ever go to Germany this will be one of the top foods I want to try!
