National Coffee Day!

White Ceramic Mu Fill of Coffee

Hmmm… coffee. The drink of the writers.

Well, not every writer.

Today is National Coffee Day so here’s a few fun facts about my favorite brew:

^ The word “coffee” comes from the Arabic word for “wine for the bean”.

^ History tells us that Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat herder discovered coffee. History also tells us that this is a myth.

^ Coffee arrived in Venice, Italy in 1570. It was mostly sold to the wealthy.

Coffee also has health benefits.

It can help prevent diabetes, reduce the risk of Parkinson’s Disease, lowers the risk of liver cancer, and lowers the risk of heart failure. Coffee has also been found to reverse liver damage caused by alcohol. As for me, whenever I have a serious headache or an upset stomach, I drink black coffee. Works like a charm. By the way, I am immune to coffee. It doesn’t keep me up or make me go crazy.

^ Coffee is the world’s second most valuable traded commodity after petroleum.

^ Brazil has been the largest producer of coffee for the last 150 years.

^ This was my favorite fun stat:

The first webcam was created in Cambridge to check the status of a coffee pot!

^ And this one: There’s a coffee shop in France where not saying “hello” and “please” makes your coffee more expensive. And they say the French are rude! This coffee shop is none other than La Petite Syrah.
